Subsurface pumped hydropower storage
Storage eliminates power-price volatility resulting from intermittent renewable energy supply.
There’s an imbalance between when renewable energy is generated and when it's needed. Our patent-pending SPHS technology allows renewable power to be time-shifted to meet demand, increasing storage duration from hours to days. It’s a flexible, long-duration solution designed for today’s grid and tomorrow’s clean energy goals.
Oil and Gas Production
Conventional, high-permeability, subsurface reservoirs developed for oil and gas production.
Depleted Oil and Gas Reservior
Pressure depleted oil and gas pools or isolated brine reservoirs can be repurposed for Subsurface Pumped Hydropower Storage. These legacy assets provide a cost effective and proven foundation for large scale energy storage using existing subsurface energy infrastructure.
Energy storage
When renewable generation exceeds demand, excess energy is used to pump brine from the subsurface reservoir into a surface tank or pond.
Power delivery
As power demand rises, brine flows back down the well through the turbine to generate electricity. The system effectively converts potential energy of stored brine into power on demand, sending it to the grid when renewable supply is low.
SPHS is simple and cost-competitive
SPHS combines the positive attributes of pumped hydro with advanced but proven oilfield infrastructure, delivering 20+ hour duration at a highly competitive energy storage cost. With no need for freshwater and minimal surface impact, SPHS stands out as a scalable, long term solution for grid-scale energy storage.
